Prestigious Cooper Art Prize open to South Yorkshire artists

A prestigious art competition is now open to South Yorkshire artists.

The Cooper Prize, launched by Barnsley’s exciting art space The Cooper Gallery celebrates the work of artists at all stages in their career who were born, live or work in South Yorkshire.

In its first year as the Cooper Prize the competition has evolved from its original format of the South Yorkshire Art Competition. Its aim is to celebrate the wealth of artistic talent in the region.

From the entries, shortlisted artworks will be gathered together to feature in an exciting exhibition in the Gallery in 2021.

The most outstanding artwork selected from each category will receive fantastic prizes;

Cooper Prize: £1,000, sponsored by the Cooper Trustees, main gallery exhibition with Cooper Prize finalists & solo exhibition in Sadler Room, 2022

The Sadler Award:  £500, sponsored by The Mayor of Barnsley, main gallery exhibition with Cooper Prize finalists & six month use of artist studio in Cooper Cottage (subject to availability)

The Fox Gift: £100 vouchers to spend on artists materials, sponsored by Calder Art Supplies, main gallery exhibition with Cooper Prize finalists

People’s Choice Award: non-monetary prize in the form of a certificate.

The judging panel reviewing submissions have been handpicked for their expertise and will assess all artwork via the competition’s new digital portal.

Entry to the prize has been reduced for one year only to help support local artists during these uncertain times.  The cost for entry is Cooper Prize £10, The Sadler Award, £5 and The Fox Gift is free to enter

The shortlist of artists will be announced on Monday, 1 March.

Cllr Tim Cheetham, Cabinet Spokesperson for Place (Regeneration and Culture) said:

The Cooper Gallery has always been hugely supportive of local artistic talent.  This competition is one way to raise the profile of artists in the region and shine a spotlight on the quality of work that can be found here.  The prizes will hopefully be a real springboard for those entering to enhance their careers and allow them to go on to create more outstanding works of art.
