A Retrospective Exhibition by Tony Heald
Most of the artists life has been involved with two passions, Art and Education.
His friend and mentor, Robin Tanner, etcher and H.M. Inspector of Schools, devised the term, 'In Double Harness' to describe his own dual life as artist and educationist, hence the title for this exhibition.
The aim, here, is to show how these two pursuits, became a symbiotic partnership, each enhancing the other which Tony has been fortunate to follow since studying art and education at York St. John University in the early 60s.
He strongly believes that the Arts must be the very centre of human life and has endeavoured to make this the core of his teaching method, nurturing in others their creativity, in order to receive a meaningful education.
Healds involvement in education, was nationally recognised when, as headteacher of Ardsley Oaks Junior School, received the accolade, 'Green School of Great Britain', presented by Friends of the Earth and TV-am. In 1977 the school was awarded the Queen's Jubilee Bronze, Silver and Gold Awards for ‘outstanding contribution to environmental awareness’, presented by the Queen and Duke of Edinburgh at St. James' Palace, London.
He has exhibited throughout the U.K. and Europe, Broadway, New York; Alaska and New Zealand with paintings and book illustrations having world-wide distribution.
This staggering retrospective is as inspiring to the viewer as Tony Healds teaching was to his pupils
